Count what you hold
Bridge players describe a hand with a simple count: an ace is 4 points, a king 3, a queen 2, a jack 1. There are 40 points in the whole pack, so an average hand has 10.
The count is not the whole story, but it gives you and your partner a shared language. "I have about 13" means something precise.
Most beginners open the bidding with 12 or more points.
A hand holds two aces, one king and one jack. How many points is it?
