Cooking and food

For the grown-up beside a child who loves cooking and food.

The sideline card

Three numbers to notice

  1. The oven temperature and the timer: one says how hot, the other how long.
  2. Halving or doubling a recipe changes every amount by the same factor, the spoons and the cups alike.
  3. When to start, worked backward from when the food should be ready.

On the way home, ask: “If we only had one pan, what would you cook first?”

Ask because you are curious, and let any answer stand. Print this page for a half-page card.

Where it came from

A little history, and what nobody knows

The standard cup

Fannie Farmer’s Boston Cooking-School Cook Book of 1896 helped to standardise the measurements used in cooking in the United States.

The source does not say how quickly home cooks took the new measures up.
