← Thinking in Rates · Lesson 1 of 4

One number over another

A rate is one quantity divided by another. Pace is time over distance: 30 minutes for 5 kilometres is 6 minutes per kilometre.

Speed is the same pair the other way up, distance over time. Neither is better; they answer different questions. Pace tells a runner how a lap should feel; speed tells a driver how far an hour goes.

One question

You walk 8 kilometres in 40 minutes. What is your pace?

Say it back
A lesson is kept once you've answered the question and written at least 8 words. Nobody grades it; it stays on this device.
