Wait
After you answer, wait. Young children often need longer than grown-ups expect to take their turn: several seconds, sometimes far more. Filling the silence takes the turn away from them.
Practise this with another grown-up first. One of you makes a small move and the other waits a full minute and a half in silence before answering. It feels long. That feeling is the point of the practice.
You answered your child’s move and they have gone quiet, still looking at the toy. What helps most?
A lesson is kept once you've answered the question and written at least 8 words. Nobody grades it; it stays on this device.
