What the guidance says about contact
In 2016 the American Academy of Pediatrics published a clinical report on youth martial arts. It noted fitness benefits and a lower injury risk for noncontact forms and techniques, and a higher risk from contact sparring, blows to the head, and choking or submission moves.
Rules differ by art, age group and organisation. It is reasonable to ask a club and a tournament which of these their rules allow for your child’s age.
According to that report, which carries the higher injury risk?
