← The Partnership Table · Lesson 3 of 4

The opening lead

The first card played is chosen before anyone can see the dummy, the hand laid face up. It is a guess, but an informed one.

A common beginner's rule is to lead the top of a run of touching high cards, such as the king from king, queen, jack. It is safe and it tells your partner what you hold.

The lead is also a message: you are pointing your partner at the suit you would like them to help with.

One question

You hold king, queen and jack of spades. Which spade is the usual beginner's lead?
