First Reading at Home

Four short lessons for the years before a child reads: play with sounds by ear, tell a letter's name from its sound, start with their own name, and read the same book again.

For grown-ups, from what LetterTots teaches children at Spark & Anvil.

  1. Lesson 1Sounds before letters
  2. Lesson 2A letter has a name and a sound
  3. Lesson 3Start with their own name
  4. Lesson 4Lap rhymes, and the same book again

The sound hunt

You'll need: five things from the kitchen.

  1. Put the five things on the table.
  2. Say a sound, short: /m/.
  3. The child finds the thing that starts with it.
  4. Swap: the child says a sound and you find it.
