Video games

For the grown-up beside a child who loves video games.

The sideline card

Three numbers to notice

  1. The points needed for the next level, and how the gap between levels grows.
  2. A 1-in-100 drop chance does not promise the item by the hundredth try; it can come sooner or much later.
  3. A health bar: how many hits it takes, found by dividing the health by the damage of each hit.

On the way home, ask: “What part of the game felt fair, and what felt unfair?”

Ask because you are curious, and let any answer stand. Print this page for a half-page card.

Where it came from

A little history, and what nobody knows

Experience points

In Dungeons & Dragons, first published in 1974, characters earn experience points and go up a level when they have enough.

Who first thought of counting experience in points is not settled.
