Fractions for Grown-ups

Three short lessons on fractions the way your child meets them now: a string that sings in fractions, a number line where 1/2 and 2/4 land on the same spot, and dividing by a half.

For grown-ups, from what FractionForge teaches children at Spark & Anvil.

Fold a fraction strip

You'll need: four strips of paper the same length and a pencil.

  1. Leave one strip whole. Fold one in half, one in quarters and one in eighths; label the folds.
  2. Line them up and find every fraction that matches ½.
  3. Ask the child: how many eighths make a quarter?
  4. Use the strips to show how many quarters fit in two whole strips.
