← Spark & Whetstone · A Morning Page with a Grandchild

A week at the kitchen table

For a grandparent and a grandchild of about three to five. Ten minutes a day is plenty. The story follows Bun the hedgehog through market day, the same week the child may be playing in TableTots. Week 42 of the year.

  1. Day 1

A game for the table: Hop like a bunny five times, then two more.

Read aloud: Bun the hedgehog loads today’s page onto her little cart and rolls down Market Street…

Their turn to teach: Let them teach you to count to five.

The page: Make 5 tally marks · Trace the letter A

No printer? Use beans, buttons, or blocks on the table — same activity, no page needed.

  2. Day 2

A game for the table: Point to something that starts with the same sound as “ball”.

Read aloud: At the Counting Stall, Bun helps a mouse count exactly the right number of berries.

Their turn to teach: Let them show you the letter your name starts with.

The page: Trace the letter A · Count the ducks and write how many

No printer? Use beans, buttons, or blocks on the table — same activity, no page needed.

  3. Day 3

A game for the table: Build a tower and count the blocks as it grows.

Read aloud: At the Letter Stall, Bun sorts the wooden letters so every sign spells its shop just right.

Their turn to teach: Let them teach you a round shape and a square shape.

The page: Trace the circle · Trace the letter A

No printer? Use beans, buttons, or blocks on the table — same activity, no page needed.

  4. Day 4

A game for the table: Count the steps from the door to the table together.

Read aloud: At the Shape Stall, Bun matches round plates to round shelves and square tins to square ones.

Their turn to teach: Let them tell you the first sound of your favourite food.

The page: Make 5 tally marks · Count the apples and write how many

No printer? Use beans, buttons, or blocks on the table — same activity, no page needed.

  5. Day 5

A game for the table: Find three round things in the kitchen.

Read aloud: At the Sound Stall, Bun listens for the first sound of every fruit and calls it out.

Their turn to teach: Let them show you something big and something small.

The page: Trace the circle · Trace the letter B

No printer? Use beans, buttons, or blocks on the table — same activity, no page needed.

  6. Day 6

A game for the table: Clap the beats in everyone’s name.

Read aloud: On the walk home, Bun teaches a sleepy owl the one thing she learned today.

Their turn to teach: Let them teach you to clap the beats in “el-e-phant”.

The page: Count the apples and write how many · Count the ducks and write how many

No printer? Use beans, buttons, or blocks on the table — same activity, no page needed.

  7. Day 7

A game for the table: Sort the spoons into big and small.

Read aloud: Bun parks her cart, ready to bring a brand-new page tomorrow morning.

Their turn to teach: Let them tell you one thing you learned today.

The page: Trace the circle · Trace the letter A

No printer? Use beans, buttons, or blocks on the table — same activity, no page needed.

Nothing here is timed or scored, and nothing is stored or sent. If a day doesn't happen, start again tomorrow; there is no catching up.
