Skating
For the grown-up beside a child who loves skating.
The child's own door is Skating on Spark & Anvil.
There is no Whetstone tool or course for skating yet, so this page is the sideline card and your child's ladder.
Three numbers to notice
- The turns in the air: a triple jump turns three times, and an Axel, the only scored jump taken off forwards, turns half a turn more.
- The judges mark each element from −5 to +5, and the highest and lowest marks are dropped.
- Six kinds of jump: three take off from the edge of the blade (Axel, Salchow, loop) and three push off the toe pick (toe loop, flip, Lutz).
On the way home, ask: “Which jump or spin today did you want to try, and why?”
Ask because you are curious, and let any answer stand. Print this page for a half-page card.
Numbers checked against: ISU: How do you score points in figure skating?; ISU: Figure skating jumps explained; ISU: scoring system and rules
