Photography
For the grown-up beside a child who loves photography.
The child's own door is Photography on Spark & Anvil.
There is no Whetstone tool or course for photography yet, so this page is the sideline card and your child's ladder.
Three numbers to notice
- The shutter speed, like 1/250: the fraction of a second the light gets in.
- Each full f-stop, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, lets in half as much light as the one before.
- ISO 200 needs half the light that ISO 100 does.
On the way home, ask: “Which photo would you take again, and what would you change?”
Ask because you are curious, and let any answer stand. Print this page for a half-page card.

The same idea at every age
- Ages 3–5Not made yet
- Ages 6–8The Rule of Thirds
- Ages 9–14One Stop, Twice the Light
- Ages 15–18Why f/4 Comes After f/2.8
Your child will meet this idea again at every age. The sideline card is the part for you.
