Knitting
For the grown-up beside a child who loves knitting.
The child's own door is Knitting on Spark & Anvil.
There is no Whetstone tool or course for knitting yet, so this page is the sideline card and your child's ladder.
Three numbers to notice
- The gauge on the label: how many stitches make 4 inches (10 cm).
- The yarn weight number, from 0 (lace) to 7 (jumbo).
- The needle size: a US 8 needle is 5 mm across.
On the way home, ask: “Which row was hardest to keep count of?”
Ask because you are curious, and let any answer stand. Print this page for a half-page card.
Numbers checked against: Craft Yarn Council: Standard Yarn Weight System (gauge, weights 0–7); Craft Yarn Council: Hooks and needles (US 8 = 5 mm)
The same idea at every age

Your child will meet this idea again at every age. The sideline card is the part for you.
