Diving

For the grown-up beside a child who loves diving.

The sideline card

Three numbers to notice

  1. Each judge scores from 0 to 10, in half points.
  2. With five judges the highest and lowest scores are left out; with seven, the two highest and the two lowest.
  3. The degree of difficulty multiplies what is left, so a harder dive can win with lower marks.

On the way home, ask: “Would you rather try a harder dive or a cleaner one?”

Ask because you are curious, and let any answer stand. Print this page for a half-page card.

Where it came from

A little history, and what nobody knows

Seven judges

With seven diving judges, the two highest and the two lowest scores are dropped; the middle three are added and multiplied by the dive’s degree of difficulty.

The source does not say when diving began dropping the top and bottom scores.
