Dance

For the grown-up beside a child who loves dance.

There is no Whetstone tool or course for dance yet, so this page is the sideline card and your child's ladder.

The sideline card

Three numbers to notice

  1. The count: many dancers count in eights, so “5, 6, 7, 8” means get ready, and the dance starts on the next 1.
  2. A waltz has three beats in each bar: ONE two three, with the strong beat on one.
  3. Tempo in bars a minute: a competition waltz runs at 28 to 30, a quickstep at 50 to 52.

On the way home, ask: “Which part of the dance did the music tell you to do?”

Ask because you are curious, and let any answer stand. Print this page for a half-page card.

Numbers checked against: WDSF Competition Rules, E.3.2 (tempi)
